The Guardian has an excellent article on what it’s like to have been diagnosed with autism late in life–like I was. I have known I was on the spectrum for half a decade now, but I only received my official diagnosis a little over a year ago, with a confirmation of that diagnosis only a few weeks ago (in an interview with a psychologist to try to get on Disability). The people interviewed in the article seem to have practically identical experiences as I’ve had. And each of them are artists of some kind–including two visual artists and a poet (I too am a poet). It’s odd that so many are artists given that autistics are supposedly deficient in imaginative creativity.
